We are thrilled to announce that our new well is complete, providing our camp with safe drinking water that now contains only trace amounts of nitrates. This journey began in 2023, when we discovered that our water consistently exceeded acceptable nitrate levels for three consecutive quarters.
For those eager to understand how we achieved this milestone, here’s a detailed overview of the process:
1. Engaging Expertise: We enlisted the help of Andrew Rieschick, a skilled engineer from Rieschick Drilling Company in Fall City, Nebraska.
2. Approval Process: Our engineer promptly submitted the new well plans to the State of Nebraska engineer for review and approval.
3. Drilling the Well: Once we received approval, we drilled a new well reaching a depth of 350 feet, a significant improvement over our old well, which was only 160 feet deep. We conducted thorough water testing to confirm the reduction in nitrate levels.
4. Connecting to the System: The well company undertook extensive work to seamlessly connect the new well to our existing water system, which involved substantial digging and the installation of new water lines.
5. Final Checks: Flushing the new system and conducting additional water tests were the last crucial steps before finalizing the connection.
Throughout this process, we maintained transparency by submitting quarterly water tests and progress reports to the Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment. We also fulfilled our obligation to inform our guests by posting notifications in each building, reminding them of the previous high nitrate levels. The legal limit in Nebraska is 10 mg/L; our readings were at 11.9 mg/L.
While the steps may seem straightforward, the reality included numerous delays, setbacks, and a fair share of waiting—challenges that are all too common in projects of this nature.
As we celebrate this achievement, we now face the important task of raising $80,000 to cover the final costs associated with this essential state-mandated well project. We are placing our trust in God during this time of need and humbly ask you to consider making a gift of any amount to support us in meeting this critical expense. Your generosity can truly make a difference in ensuring the continued safety and well-being of our camp community. Thank you for your prayerful consideration!
