Refugee and Immigrant Church Communities in ABC Nebraska

The American Baptist Churches of Nebraska is home to many different ethnic groups, including refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants from Burma (Karen, Kachin, and Chin), African Nations (South Sudan, Nigeria, and Liberia), and Latino countries (Mexico, Columbia, Panama, Guatemala, and others). Refugee and immigrant church communities represent 1/3 of all churches in fellowship with ABC NE.

A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her home because of war, violence, or persecution, often without warning. They cannot return home until conditions in their native lands are safe for them again.

An immigrant is someone who makes a conscious decision to leave his or her home and move to a foreign country to settle there. Immigrants often undergo a lengthy vetting process to immigrate to a new country. Many become lawful permanent residents and eventually citizens.

Recent sudden changes in governmental policies have created confusion and misinformation. This is a developing story where new information can change nearly daily. However, below are a few resources to help local churches, pastors, and members find clarity. There are also resources for individuals to engage in the care and support of refugee and immigrant church communities through advocacy.
